A person is most likely to choose to become a part of a subculture during their late childhood or adolescent years. By definition a subculture is a group within a larger culture that differentiates themselves. Subcultures often posses their own belief systems, values, and practices. Often times they help adolescents to develop their own individual identity. The skateboarding subculture is a large group which is primarily made up of younger males. “Estimates of the number of skateboarders in the United States range from 12 to 20 million. Most are able-bodied males aged 8 to 22 years.” (Bradley) Subcultures can of course persist across ones entire lifetime and this is seen with skateboarding. Although skateboarding is primarily a youth subculture, some continue to be a part of the culture in their middle age and for their entire lives.”
